Jena Nelson Agrees to Five Debates with Walters
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (September 25, 2022) –Jena Nelson, 2020 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, has accepted five offers from media outlets and community organizations to debate Ryan Walters in the statewide race for Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Nelson has agreed to debate Walters with media outlets including KOCO, KOKH, NonDoc, a community organization comprised of Western Oklahoma Educators and Superintendents, and the Tulsa World in partnership with the Oklahoma League of Women Voters.
Walters has yet to respond to the debate requests after promising to debate his general election opponent. The guarantee was made during a debate with his run-off opponent April Grace on August 9.
“Oklahomans deserve transparent government,” Nelson said. “Education is apolitical — not Republican or Democrat. That said, voters deserve the opportunity to hear the candidates running for the state’s highest education office to respectfully debate the issues that will significantly impact our children and our communities.
I hope Mr. Walters fulfills his earlier campaign promise to provide Oklahomans with the chance to make informed decisions and what is best for Oklahoma public education during these debates.”
